![]() If you can’t find what you’re looking for in stores, check online. If you aren’t brand loyal, it can be a great way to try out a new bourbon or cabernet at a (slightly) reduced price. These sales, which generally range from one to five dollars off hundreds of wines and spirits, are in effect at every state store for the entire month. Proposals for varying degrees of privatization have been bouncing around Harrisburg for years, but for now the PLCB chugs along, largely untouched since the end of Prohibition.Įach month, Fine Wine & Good Spirits posts a list of in-store specials. Others say that the laws are arcane, inconvenient and drastically limit selection (you’ll never guess what side I’m on). The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB) argues that the current system generates important revenue for the state and that their bulk buying power allows them to pass on savings to consumers. The debate continues to rage over whether the system ought to be privatized. They keep a close eye on beer as well, regulating where, when and how much of it can be sold. Pennsylvania has some of the strictest alcohol laws in the country and is one of only two states where the government maintains a complete monopoly over the sale of wine and spirits (Utah is the other). That was my introduction to our fair state’s wild and wacky attitudes towards booze. I left with lots of questions and a case of some unremarkable beer. I asked the guy at the counter where the six-packs were and he mumbled something about a sports bar down the street. I walked in and found-you guessed it-nary a six-pack in sight. My uncle pointed me towards a place, and I figured I would grab a six-pack on my way. These would all be within a brief walking distance of the main business districts in Shadyside.įrom there, a few apartments are also available to rent on sites like VRBO as well to enjoy the heart of this residential neighborhood.Shortly after moving to Pittsburgh a few years ago, I needed to pick up some beer for a potluck. There are many other hotels right at the neighborhood boundary including the Courtyard by Marriott Shadyside and Hyatt House Pittsburgh (both technically in Bloomfield) plus the SpringHill Suites by Marriott in Bakery Square (Larimer/East Liberty). The only hotel located within Shadyside proper is the luxury hotel Mansions on Fifth. As parking here can be somewhat limited, if you are visiting this section of Shadyside especially, it may make the most sense to head to the garage and save yourself a few loops around the neighborhood. The one exception to this would be the Walnut Street business district which has a paid parking garage located on Bellefonte Street just behind The Yard restaurant. ![]() While not a bar, this store sells 100% made in PA libations and is the city's second location after first opening in the Strip District!įor the most part, the main business districts of Shadyside offer metered street parking on the main roads and permit parking on side streets with limited duration free for non-permit holders (be sure to check the signs). We also have to give a shoutout to PA Libations as well.
